Since 2007 we commemorated the 60th Anniversary of 228 Massacre of the Taiwanese by the Republic of China's (ROC) troups, the world has changed. (Please view the slide show on the left for the images of March for Taiwan of 228-60 in 2007)

Support Taiwan Republic!

After the Ma regime of Taiwan came into the power in May of 2008,  the Taiwanese discovered that they were losing the freedom of being "Taiwanese" in a stunning speed. Not only that but also the "ROC" supporters found out that they lost the idea of "Republic of China". The status quo of Taiwan and ROC were broken under the "hiden" dictatorship of Ma.

As they say, "No man is an island in life", likewise no nation could be isolated in this world. While the US is involved in so many fronts of the world affairs plus the domestic problems, why do we need to care about Taiwan? Particularly, when the Taiwanese elected a pro-China "president"?

We believe a strong independent, democratic and free Taiwan is to the best interest of the United States of America. Let us march together to say "YES" to this Taiwan!

Goal:

Through the actions of Raising the Taiwan Flag in March for Taiwan Republic we wish to see a democratic and independent Taiwan free from internal and external threats. Year 2009 marks the 30-year anniversary of Taiwan Relations Act (TRA). Through these actions the Taiwanese Americans will commemorate TRA and encourage the US and the world stand by and recognize a free and democratic Taiwan Republic.

Background of TAIWAN RELATIONS ACT (April 10, 1979)

The Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) was initiated by Congress and signed into law by President Carter. US-Taiwan diplomatic relations had been terminated three months earlier. The US Congress found it necessary to enact the TRA.

The TRA created the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) - a private corporation to handle "unofficial relations" between Taiwan and the US. Important clauses in the TRA are: It is the policy of the US 1) to declare that peace and stability in the area are in the political, security and economic interests of the United States, and are matters of international concern; 2) to make clear that the United States decision to establish diplomatic relations with the PRC rests upon the expectation that the future of Taiwan will be determined by peaceful means; 3) to consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means ... a threat to the peace and security of the western Pacific area and of grave concern to the US; 4) to provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character;

PRC leaders see the TRA as aimed at "preventing China's reunification" and have demanded its revocation. * Importance: The US vows that the US decision to establish diplomatic relations with the PRC rests upon the expectation that the future of Taiwan will be determined by peaceful means. The TRA played an important role in March 1996, when the US sent aircraft carriers to the Taiwan Strait in the midst of Chinese war games aimed at Taiwan. 
 
Actions:

1: There will be a group of people march on April 3rd, 2009 from the Independence Hall, Philadelphia to Washington, DC to meet with the second group of people. They will hold a petition of presentations to the White House, Congress on April 10th, 2009.

2: This is a March of 138 miles and it will take the marchers/bikers about 7 days to complete the entire route.
