February 24-28, 2007

The Taiwanese Americans will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the “Massacre” of Taiwan (Formosa). The “2-28 Massacre”, which occurred on February 28, 1947, is the event when tens of thousands of Taiwanese were massacred by the Chinese. This “2-28 Massacre” continues to be a dark reminder on Taiwan of the atrocities that were committed by the forces of Chiang Kai-Shek and subsequent 40 years of dark ages of martial law under the totalitarian Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). Today, the KMT in Taiwan and Communist China (PRC) are still riding the after effect of this Taiwanese nightmare to control the politics in Taiwan in order to achieve the Chinese annexation of this free, democratic and prosperous island nation.

The March for Taiwan, to be walked or run by hundreds of participants from Philadelphia (the cradle of liberty) to Washington, D.C., will last for 5 days (February 24-28, 2007). When the marchers go through the cities of Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., they will hold memorial services. In conjunction with the March for Taiwan, there will be a 2-28 symposium held at the Brookings Institution of Washington, D.C. and a photo exhibition of the “2-28 Massacre” displayed in the Capitol Hill.

The March for Taiwan will urge our nation, the United States of America, to continue to promote freedom and democracy around the world. We will urge the U.S. to specifically stand up against Chinese threat to deny the right to self-determination of the Taiwanese people. This event is organized by the 228 60th Anniversary Memorial Action Committee (228-60 AMAC) comprising more than 40 major Taiwanese American organizations.
